Meet Yana Kang, an Intern

Age: 20

Current Location: Chapel Hill, North Carolina

What issues do you care about and how do they connect to your life?

I care about political issues that have both national and regional impacts on the United States of America. This includes sectors like the economy and taxation, health, civil rights, government relations, foreign affairs, national security and defense, science and technology, and education.

How do you balance life and civic engagement to live a civically engaged life?

I strive to involve myself in the community as much as possible. In the past, I’ve gotten to understand the community through spending years better volunteering at a local hospital in my area as well as my big state hospital. Through both, I’ve interacted with many diverse occupations and people in order to better understand the people of my community. Volunteering has been a great way to get to know my community and better understand its needs.

Life moves fast, and so does the news. How do you stay up-to-date and engaged with politics? (Besides IssueVoter of course!)

I am a voracious reader. I read anything I can get my hands on, and this results in many hours spent perusing various newspapers. When I have free time, I find myself scrolling through the annals of internet news.

Why did you start using IssueVoter?

I started using IssueVoter to get streamlined access to the latest news. I realized it was a great resource for me to stay updated on my representatives in Congress. I wanted to understand what was going on at the local level.

What is your favorite part of using IssueVoter?

My favorite thing about IssueVoter is the nonpartisan aspect. I grew up in a highly liberal area where expressing opinions different from those of the majority was frowned upon. People should be able to make political decisions for themselves not based on political or party expectations, but based on what issues speak for them. As such, a nonpartisan and unbiased resource such as IssueVoter is vital for helping people make decisions uninfluenced by the stigma and polarization of the party system.

What is your go-to podcast or newsletter?

My go-to newsletter is the New York Times’s TimesDigest newsletter.

What people and/or organizations do you look up to, related to the issues you care about?

I look up to Senator Marco Rubio because he is an advocate for individual liberty and religious freedom.

What is your favorite song about America?

My favorite song about America is “America the Beautiful,” because it is a highly patriotic and nostalgic song that reflects my love for America.

What is your favorite quote?

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” — Mark Twain

Complete this sentence… “A healthy democracy is…”
